Don’t give up on yourself and those you love.  Everyone has challenges in their life, and God knows that we have inner strength to make it through.  My autistic son, Anthony, has taught me the meaning on love as I have struggled to support him.  Without my love, Anthony would not have a meaningful life, and without Anthony, my life would be empty.  There were two instances that convinced me that my life is awesome.

The first was when Anthony was in preschool.  Anthony had been diagnosed as a nonverbal autistic child at the age of three, and did not interact with other children.  On this particular day, I found a note in Anthony’s backpack from the aftercare teacher stating that he had engaged with other little boys, and one of them kicked him in the mouth.  I asked Anthony if the little boy kicked him in the mouth and tears rolled down his cheeks.  It was a breakthrough moment for me because I knew Anthony had not engaged with the other boys.  I immediately took Anthony back to the school to meet with the principal and substitute teacher about Anthony injured chin.  They both confirmed that the other boy had kicked Anthony in the mouth because he wanted his toys and snacks.  That day Anthony and I had communicated at a deeper level than ever before, and he knew by my action I would always be a strong advocate for him to make certain people treated him fairly.

The second eye opening incident occurred in our home a year later.  We had relocated to another county to seek the best schools and medical care for Anthony’s autism.  He was improving on gluten and casein free diet.  Anthony had tactile sensitivity to rough painted objects, but he enjoyed the feeling of smooth textures.  One day,  Anthony took the flour from the pantry and spread it around the kitchen as he felt the smooth texture. After speaking with my mom on the phone I proceeded to vacuum up the flour. I realized that Anthony would be frightened by the sound of the vacuum, so I rushed to finish.  When I turned around, I was terrified to discover that Anthony had the cord in his mouth and his entire body was shaking violently.  My first response was to try to yank the vacuum cord out of is mouth; but, this didn’t work.  The Holy Spirit told me to pull the plug from the outlet.  Then prayed to God, as King, to guide his angels around my son to protect him from harm.  After I unplugged the cord, Anthony body immediately went limp as he fell into my arms with his eyes closed. Suddenly, Anthony woke up and started crying very loudly.  The ambulance arrived quickly, and his doctors at the hospital eventually released him.

These two incidents made me aware of how precious my son is to me.  I promised God no matter how hard life gets, I will remind myself that MY LIFE IS AWESOME because without me, my son would not have a life.  My mission in life is to spread my message of MLIA, MY LIFE IS AWESOME.  Despite what you are going through yourself or the challenges that your children present to you, never give up on yourself or them. My message to people going through hard time is, “Cherish your life forever!”
